The High Country High School Chorale will perform their Christmas choral concert on Thursday, December 17. The free performance will take place in ASU’s Hayes School of Music Rosen Concert Hall at 7:30 p.m.

The High Country High School Chorale began as a dream shared more than four years ago by Conductor Pamela Hopton-Jones and Dottie Sykes, conductor of the Presbyterian-Methodist Community Children’s Choir, which she has conducted for nearly 30 years.

This dream has now resulted in the first High Country High School Chorale, an ensemble of 30 charter members—a mix of public, private and homeschooled high school students.

The Chorale exists to increase the appreciation of, and participation in, a high quality choral music experience by the youth of the High Country. By so doing, it increases the overall musical experience of the culture at large.

The High Country High School Chorale is in its first semester and is excited to share with the community what it has accomplished. The following repertoire will be performed:

“Jesus is Born;“ “Alabare” (“Sing Allelu”); “Psalm 139;” “Come to Me” (based on Matthew 11:28 to 30); “Jazz Gloria,” featuring Patrick Coston on string bass and Doug Jones on tubano; “The Prince of Peace;” “Mary Did You Know?;” “Carols Around;” “Little Babe;” the South African song “Mangwane Mpulele/Kinelwaki Pule;” “Deck the Halls,” featuring Patrick Coston on triangle and Doug Jones on snare drum; and “Caribe Noel,” featuring percussionists Doug Jones on tubano, Patrick Coston on guiro and James Ellington on maracas.

Charter members of the High Country High School Chorale include: sopranos Sarah Barry, Kassie Casner, Sidney Ginn, Elizabeth Harrell, Katie Hartley, Marjorie Hubert, Ashton Kacsmaryk, Caroline Lonas, Stephanie Richard, Laiken Williams and Lizzie Zimmerman; altos Anne Barbee, Hannah Bates, Addi Berry, Emily Berry, Leah Clemens, Stephanie Freyler, Lauren Jones and Gwen Prevette; tenors Shepherd Barry, Titus Casner, Nathan Jones, Jon Kelley and Nathanael Rains; and basses Nathan Bates, Justin Drake,  James Ellington, Jonathan Faulks, Eric Griffin and Edward Oliver.

Laura Coston is the accompanist for the High Country High School Chorale, Sykes is the Chorale assistant and Hopton-Jones is the conductor.
The second semester will rehearse from January to May 2010.

Those interested in joining the High Country High School Chorale should email Hopton-Jones at jonespd@appstate.edu or call 828-263-8367.
