Flapjack Flip at Watauga High School December 12

School principals will serve up pancakes at the Flapjack Flip, held to benefit the Watauga Education Foundation (WEF), on Saturday, December 12, from 7:30 to 11:00 a.m. at the Watauga High School cafeteria.
The breakfast features all the pancakes you can eat, with an option of homemade blueberry syrup, plus all the milk, juice or Bald Guy Brew coffee you can drink for $6.
The WEF provides classroom grants for creative initiatives that fall outside the state and local budgets, funds continuing education for teachers, funds Battle of the Books, produces Shooting Stars and is bringing Imagination Library—a program to get books into children’s hands even before they can read—to the area, said Melanie Bullard, WEF executive director.
“Bring the family,” Bullard said, adding that even parade participants will have time to eat before the parade lineup begins.
Principals will accept tips for serving pancakes, which will go to their school’s PTSA, Bullard said, adding that elementary school principals Tom Trexler of Cove Creek and Phillip Griffin of Green Valley will serve from 8:00 to 9:00 a.m., and Patrick Sukow of Blowing Rock and Mary Smalling of Hardin Park will serve from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m.
WEF board member Ben Shoemake is chair of the flapjack committee and has been organizing the event, Bullard said.
For the third year, school PTSAs will sell a variety of crafts and gifts to benefit the respective schools’ PTSAs.
“We felt this was a great way to get smaller schools in front of a larger audience,” Bullard said.
Mabel Elementary will sell photographs with Santa and Valle Crucis Elementary will sell chances to win homemade baskets, she said.
Toward the end of the event, raffle drawings will be held for 15 limited raffles.
“We have some pretty incredible packages,” Bullard said.
Raffle tickets can be purchased online, and only 20 chances are sold for each of the packages.
“Once they’re gone, they’re gone,” Bullard said.
Winners do not need to be present to win, and proceeds benefit the WEF. As each individual package sells out, it will be removed from the online listing, which can be viewed by clicking to www.wefnc.org.
“We really want to sell out our raffle,” Bullard said. “Last year, we did not sell out.”
This year, more than ever, Bullard said, the schools need the supplemental funding provided by the WEF.
“We lost 50 teachers this year,” she said. “If you walk down the hall in our schools, one in four bulbs is burning, to save money. What’s that telling you? We’re needed; we’re desperately needed.”
Additionally, the stipend provided to each teacher to purchase classroom materials was halved this year, Bullard said.
The WEF strives to fund creative projects that will leave an impact on the kids of Watauga County Schools—allowing them to experience learning rather than just read about science, for example, Bullard explained.
“We want to create productive citizens,” she said.
“We get so much support from this community,” Bullard continued. “We have more than 200 local businesses that support us. That’s saying a lot.”
