Mountain Home Music Presents ‘An Appalachian Christmas’ Saturday
Well known High Country fiddle trio the Forget-Me-Nots will perform at Mountain Home Music’s “An Appalachian Christmas” this Saturday, December 5, at Grace Lutheran Church.Mountain Home Music will present “An Appalachian Christmas” at Grace Lutheran Church this Saturday, December 5, at 8:00 p.m.
“This annual free concert is a way to show our appreciation to the community and also a way to, hopefully, do some good,” said Joe Shannon, founder and host of Mountain Home Music. “Even though there’s no admission, we do pass a collection plate, and 100 percent of the proceeds are shared between the Hospitality House and Santa’s Toy Box.”
Featured this year are nationally acclaimed dulcimer player, Madeline McNeil, the Forget-Me-Nots, Steve Lewis and Scott Freeman.
Madeline McNeil is a name well known in the dulcimer community. Not only is she an extraordinary performer on both the mountain and hammered dulcimer, she was also the founder and publisher of The Dulcimer Player News, a magazine widely distributed throughout the United States.
McNeil produced six CDs, and she is the author of many instructional books for the mountain and hammered dulcimer. According to Roots and Branches Music, “She sings and tells the stories with her beautiful voice and exceptional dulcimer skills.”
The Forget-Me-Nots are well known throughout the High Country for their fine musicianship and many performances. Willa Finck, Maura Shawn Scalin and Ledah Finck all started playing the violin before they started kindergarten.
In 2002, they formed the Forget-Me-Nots, which includes Willa’s and Ledah’s dad, David Finck. They were featured at MerleFest two years ago and are currently working on their second CD.
Lewis and Freeman are part of Mountain Home Music’s house band, the Mountain Home Bluegrass Boys. They, too, started playing when they were very young.
While still in elementary school, Lewis played banjo and toured with the renowned Green Grass Cloggers. He also appeared as a child on the Grand Ole Opry, and for many years he played music with Tommy Fail as part of Tweetsie Railroad’s palace band.
Freeman previously played mandolin and fiddle with Skeeter and the Skidmarks and also with Alternate Roots.
“An Appalachian Christmas” will close Mountain Home Music’s 16th year of honoring the music and the musicians of the Appalachian region.
Grace Lutheran Church is located at the corner of Highways 321 and 421 in downtown Boone. In addition to the parking lot beside the church, two parking lots are located behind the church.
