New High Country Ski Club Looking for Members

Members of the ASU Ski Team were looking for a way to hang out with other local skiers and also defer costs for the team.
So team members decided to bring those two goals together and a new group called the High Country Ski Club was born.
“A lot of other ski teams in our conference, and across the nation, have clubs they sponsor,” said ASI Ski Team member Tommy Penick. “This club will be for anyone in the community who’s trying to have some fun and get out and do some skiing.”
The ski club is currently signing up members on its website, which can be accessed by clicking to www.appstateski.com/hcsc/hcsc.html.
The benefits for joining are pretty good. The $20 club fee will get a skier two free nights (December 11 and January 8) of skiing at Appalachian Ski Mountain and a pro night with 20 percent off of the entire store at Extreme Ski and Snowboard.
Only the first 100 people who sign up will get the free nights of skiing, Penick said.
Potential members can sign up online and pay for membership dues through PayPal or by mailed check.
While the ski club is in its infancy, the hope is that the club will grow and have special events together.
“Currently, we don’t have a lot of definite plans,” Penick said. “We want to make it not only a way to get some cheaper skiing, but have special events for club members, too.”
Money raised through dues will go to help offset costs for members of the ski team. Team members must pay $1,400—which doesn’t include gear—for the season and this year they will compete in five matches, including one at Sugar Mountain.
Penick and the rest of the ski team are excited to start the ski club and meet other local skiers.
“I really think the High Country has a cool niche of skiers,” Penick said. “It’s an interesting community of skiers.”
