Fabulous 40th Funk-Down and Benefit Birthday Bash at Boone Saloon Monday
This Monday, December 14, longtime High Country resident Jamie Goodman will officially go over the hill with a bang when she hosts the Fabulous 40th Funk-Down and Birthday Benefit Bash at Boone Saloon. The show starts at 9:00 p.m., and entry is a $10 donation at the door (or whatever you can afford).
Proceeds from the show will be donated to Appalachian Voices, OASIS and other worthy organizations. The show will feature live music by Melissa Reaves & Friends and Soul Benefactor, as well fun and games throughout the night.
Funk and groove rock vocalist and guitarist Melissa Reaves has been playing rhythm & blues-based tunes throughout the United States and abroad for more than a decade. Her powerful vocals and stage presence propel a diverse repertoire of originals and occasional choice covers. Reaves has shared the stage with such notables as Robert Plant, Sarah MacLachlan, Leon Russell, Sheryl Crow, Cyndi Lauper, Doc Watson and Sister Sledge.
Boone’s own funk and soul masters Soul Benefactor have been bringing the classic sounds of Stax, Motown and Atlantic Records, and Muscle Shoals to the stage for the past three years. With decades of collective experience, the multi-talented multi-instrumentalists breathe new life into songs from 1960s and 1970s masters such as Marvin Gaye, Al Green, Booker T. and the MGs, The Allman Brothers Band, Joe Cocker, The Rolling Stones and many more.
Appalachian Voices is a regional environmental organization based in Boone that works to solve environmental problems having the greatest impact on the central and southern Appalachian Mountains, including mountaintop removal coal mining and water pollution. Appalachian Voices was recently named as a Google Earth Hero, and its work is currently featured in a Google Earth Outreach video and tour at the Copenhagen, Denmark climate change conference. OASIS, Inc. (Opposing Abuse with Services, Information, and Shelter), is an organization dedicated to ending domestic violence and sexual assault in Watauga County. OASIS provides emergency services, transitional support, education and skill development, and community support to victims of assault and violence.
Goodman attended Watauga High School and graduated from ASU with a degree in English and minor in technical photography. She spent 12 years in the newspaper business at The Mountain Times and High Country Press and two years as a web developer at ASU before finding her home as a graphic designer and communications consultant with Appalachian Voices in 2008.
Goodman will be 40 years old on Monday, December 14, and she still won't drink all of her milk. She invites everyone to come out on Monday and cut loose to benefit some worthy causes. If you can't make it, be sure to donate to Appalachian Voices, OASIS or the organization of your choice. After all, 'tis the season for giving!
