Green Mother Goods Celebrates Two Years Saturday
Jimmie Griffith of Banana Da Terra, Lisa Baldwin To Perform After Parade
Jimmie Griffith, lead singer and guitarist of Brazilian jazz band Banana da Terra, will perform at Green Mother Goods’ two-year anniversary celebration this Saturday, December 12, at 11:00 a.m.
Lisa Baldwin will present a kid-oriented sing-along and showcase her pop-up books at Green Mother Goods this Saturday, December 12, beginning at 1:30 p.m.It was just over two years ago when three women—all mothers—came together and decided to open a new kind of store. Meredith Anders, Christie Fredenburg and Debi Golembieski, co-owners of Green Mother Goods in downtown Boone, envisioned a retail outlet that offered a wide variety of eco-friendly products; safe, non-toxic toys and teethers for children; and unique gifts at an affordable price.
They wanted to ensure that the products they sold were not manufactured in sweatshops and that workers received a fair wage for producing them. Last but not least, they wanted to offer an outlet for the plethora of local arts and craft talent in the area.
Since opening the doors two years ago, Green Mother Goods’ selection of local consigners has grown to nearly 200 individuals, including authors, musicians, weavers, potters, jewelry makers, painters, photographers, wood workers, toy manufacturers, seamstresses and knitters.
“It’s a lot of work keeping track of all the consignment products, but we love giving out checks every month to our friends and neighbors, knowing that we’re helping to supplement their income, feed hungry children and help our local economy prosper,” Golembieski said.
The catalog of fair-trade crafts from around the world is growing as well. Fair-trade, handcrafted products help local economies on a global level and help support rural farmers’ income so people aren’t forced to move to the city and work in unpleasant factory conditions.
“We did a lot of research initially to find the best companies we can support,” Golembieski said. “We consider the triple bottom line—not just profits, but sustainable economies, safe and earth-friendly items and human conditions in the manufacturing process.”
In addition, Green Mother Goods supports a variety of local nonprofits by selling their wares and providing space for event flyers and information.
This Saturday, December 12, Green Mother Goods will celebrate its 2nd birthday. After the Boone Holiday Parade, Jimmie Griffith of Banana da Terra will share his Brazilian-style solo project, “MaisCeu,” starting at 11:00 a.m.
At 1:30 p.m., local talent Lisa Baldwin of Learning Through Song will present a performance geared toward kids with sing-along folk songs, and she will showcase her pop-up books. The store will also serve free hot apple cider, snacks and fresh organic coffee.
Warm up after the parade while kids of all ages enjoy making holiday arts and crafts. The store will celebrate its two-year anniversary with sales and specials throughout the weekend.
