Watauga County Commissioners Reelect Officers, Staff

The Watauga County Board of Commissioners meeting on Monday, December 7, began with the election of officers and staff appointments.
All those currently serving were re-nominated for their positions, including Jim Deal as chair of the board, Billy Ralph Winkler, III as vice chair of the board, Robert (Rocky) Nelson as county manager, county attorney di Santi, Watson, Capua & Wilson, Anita Fogle as clerk to the board and Angie Ritter and Monica Harrison as substitute clerks to the board.
Each December, the commissioners elect a chair and vice chair and make staff appointments, Nelson said.
All those appointed will serve a one-year term, with reelections in December 2010, he added.
“I’m very happy to be reappointed [as county manager] to continue to serve the people of Watauga County,” Nelson said.
Commissioners will continue to serve on the same boards to which they had been assigned last year, he said.
Deal will serve on the following boards: Community Council, Educational Planning Committee, Watauga County Medical Center Board of Trustees, Watauga County Personnel Advisory Committee, Watauga County Recreation Commission, Western North Carolina Local Government Caucus and Workforce Development Consortium.
Commissioner John Cooper will serve on the following boards: Blue Ridge Resource Conservation & Development Area, Committee of 100, Community Based Affordable Housing Steering Committee, Community Council, Economic Development Commission, Future Forward and Watauga Opportunities, Inc.
Commissioner Tim Futrelle will serve on the following boards: AppalCART Authority, Caldwell Community College &Technical Institute Watauga Advisory Board, Children’s Council/Child Protection Team, Criminal Justice Partnership, Educational Planning Committee, Juvenile Crime Prevention Council, Smoky Mountain LME (Mental Health), and the POA Advisory Committee (Home & Community Care Block Grant).
Commissioner Winston Kinsey will serve on the following boards: Appalachian District Health Department, EMS Advisory Committee, Watauga County Cooperative Extension’s Advisory Leadership Board, Watauga County Energy Park Working Group and Watauga County Fire Commission.
Dr. Bobbie Short will serve on the board of the Watauga County Department of Social Services.
Winkler will serve on the following boards: High Country Council of Governments—Executive Board, Northwest Advisory Council of Advantage West and Rural Transportation Advisory Committee—Library Board, Motor Vehicle Valuation Review Committee, New River Service Authority Board and Watauga County Department of Social Services.
