Women of Influence Awards Nomination Deadline January 15
The Women of Influence Awards, an initiative of ASU’s Women’s Center, is accepting nominations through Friday, January 15, for outstanding women in four categories: ASU students, faculty, staff and community members.
The awards have taken place for the past 11 years, with the exception of last year, when the awards did not happen because of lack of participation.
Shey Ripley, an ASU freshman and this year’s awards coordinator, is working to generate more nominations for this year’s program.
“It’s always nice to be recognized for the little things we do in others' lives and that's where I want to take this program,” Ripley said, to “make sure like we've done in past years [that we] give that recognition to women who wouldn't otherwise get it.”
Those who wish to nominate a woman who exemplifies the traits of a “Super Woman” can download a nomination application through the ASU Women’s Center website.
“These women, through their community, school [and] family, demonstrate what it is to be that everyday woman who gives back to others,” Ripley said.
Ripley stressed the importance of involving the community and expanding the event beyond the ASU campus.
“I just want people to think about all the little things the women in their lives do for them,” Ripley said. “Whether they're 10 or 35, there are women around them everyday doing what they can for people besides [themselves].”
Volunteers from the Women’s Center, who are not eligible for nomination, will read each nomination after the January 15 deadline, and the winners will be recognized at the C.E.A.D. (Celebrate, Educate, Appreciate Diversity) Conference in the Plemmons Student Union at ASU on Saturday, January 30.
This year marks the first time that the diversity conference and women’s leadership conferences will be combined.
Oftentimes, award recipients of years past will contribute back to the awards by nominating someone else or by donating to the program, Ripley said.
Nomination forms, once downloaded and filled out, can be returned to the Women’s Center in person, by emailing them as an attachment to womenscenter@appstate.edu or by mailing them to: The ASU Women’s Center, Office of Multicultural Student Development, C/O CSIL, 221 College Street, Boone, NC 28608.
Prizes are donated by local businesses, and anyone who wants to donate gift certificates or other prize items should call Ripley at 702-515-9735.
