Celebrate New Year’s Eve Mountain Style
Ring in 2010 with Fireworks at High Country Ski Resorts
Fireworks, champagne toasts, torchlight parades, music, ice skating and other specials will bring in the New Year at the area’s three ski slopes on Thursday, December 31.
End the year with a big bang at one of the High Country’s ski resorts. Fireworks, champagne toasts, torchlight parades, music, ice skating and other specials will bring in the New Year.
With two feet of fresh snow, the resorts are celebrating already. Ski conditions for the upcoming Christmas week may be the best ever. Following is a compilation of what the resorts offer celebrants on New Year’s Eve—Thursday, December 31.
Appalachian Ski Mountain features fireworks by Zambelli International at midnight. The public is invited. There is a small parking charge. Skiing and snowboarding are available until 11:30 p.m. and a torch light parade follows after the lifts close. Guests can enjoy breakfast from 9:00 p.m. until midnight in Appalachian’s restaurant.
“We’ve provided fireworks on New Year’s Eve since 1992. It’s one of our best nights of the year,” said Brad Moretz, general manager of Appalachian Ski Mountain. “They shoot them off on the slopes and people watch from the deck, or on the base of the slopes or the front porch.”
Sugar Mountain Resort invites guests to “Celebrate New Year’s Mountain Style.”
The general public is invited, free of charge, to a torchlight parade and fireworks at midnight. Indoor festivities include enjoying the Terry Batson Band, known for their combo style of beach and disco music. Guests have two options: tickets for the Band Room are $80 per couple, $45 per person and include an hors d’oeuvres basket and champagne toast; tickets for the Lounge are $45 per couple, $25 pre person and include a champagne toast. Dress is casual. Reservations for the indoor festivities are required and can be made by calling 828-898-4521, extension 233.
“With over 700 rental accommodations on our mountain, even the locals can make a one night vacation out of this event,” said Talia Freeman, director of marketing at Beech Mountain Resort. “I am really excited that our ice skating rink will come to life with midnight ice skating. The session is only $5 and you can ice skate under the stars and watch the fireworks. Munchies snack bar and game room will be open by the ice skating rink, to ensure a fun filled family atmosphere for New Year’s Eve.”
Beech Mountain Fireworks are scheduled for 10:30 p.m. and open to public viewing. Guests can dance to live music in the Beech Tree Bar and Grille by Chasing Edison, a groove-based rock band playing styles as diverse as progressive metal to improvised jazz-fusion.
“They provide an ever-evolving unique experience through gut wrenching grooves, turn on a dime changes and an awe-inspiring kaleidoscopic light show,” Freeman said.
There is a $10 cover charge, $25 to reserve a table. For reservations, call 828-387-2011, extension 208, for reservations.
No matter the area resort you choose to celebrate with, be safe. Happy New Year to all!
