All five members of the Watauga County Board of Education recently won individual recognition from the North Carolina State Board Association for their commitments to continued training, and the board as a whole was honored with a Special Achievement Award for Exemplary Boards.
Each of the awards is based on how many hours of approved training were completed as of September 15.
Board Chair Lowell Younce was honored with an Award of Excellence for completing a total of 342.75 hours of training. Steve Combs received the Certificate of Achievement for completing 118.5 hours of training, and Deborah Miller was awarded the Certificate of Advanced Achievement for 205.25 hours of training. Dr. Lee Warren and Marsha Walpole each received certificates of merit. Warren completed 76.25 hours of training and Walpole completed 37 hours.
The Special Achievement Award for Exemplary Boards was awarded to the Watauga County Board of Education because all members completed at least 12 hours of training in the N.C. State Board Association’s 2008-09 year.
Younce said, “I am proud of this board’s commitment to continuing to learn how to work more effectively for our students. We are all here for one purpose and that is to help make our schools even better.”
The December 15 board of education meeting included the re-election of Younce as board chair and the election of Warren as vice chair for 2010.
