3rd Rail Jam Mixes Hip Hop and Snow at Ski Beech Saturday
The 3rd Rail Jam, a mixture of hip hop music, graffiti art, emcee battles, a snowboarding competition and an after party featuring Slick Rick, is set for this Saturday at Beech Mountain Resort.
Slick RickFor those wanting to mix snow and music, there is an event for you—a party with rapper Slick Rick is happening this weekend in the High Country.
The 3rd Rail Jam, a mixture of hip hop music, graffiti art, emcee battles and a snowboarding competition, is set for this Saturday, January 23, at Beech Mountain Resort.
After watching (or competing) in the events, you can check out Grammy-nominated rapper Slick Rick at the event’s after party.
“It’s a big party,” Beech Mountain Resort Director of Marketing and Sales Talia Freeman said. “It’s one of the most unique things I’ve seen in the area with the competition and the hip hop aspect.”
This is the second year for the event in the High Country. Freeman said that last year more than 200 people showed up for the event and more is expected this weekend.
One of the main reasons for that optimism is the night’s musical act, Slick Rick. The British-American rapper is known for such 1980s rap songs like “Hey Young World,” “Children’s Story” and “La Di Da Di.” He also rapped on Jay-Z’s top 20 hit “Girls, Girls, Girls.”
The cost for the after-party is $10 and only those 21 years old and older can get in.
As the rail competition, which begins at 4:00 p.m., is going on, there will be four DJs working turntables for fans to listen to. At 5:30 p.m., the emcee competition begins and the winner will open for Slick Rick at the after-party, probably around midnight.
The rail competition has four divisions—kids, women, beast of breed and skiers—with prizes given out in each group.
Freeman said she expects lots of local college kids will be at the event but she also expects fans of all ages to be at the event.
The grassroots snow competition successfully kicked off earlier this month with an event at Mountain Creek in Vernon, N.J., and there will be three other jams in later months.
