Haircut 101’s Hot Lips 2010 Contest: Stop by, Pucker Up

Contest Ends February 13

The Hot Lips 2010 Contest is already underway, with about 14 entries as of press time, according to John Mena, owner of Haircut 101 in downtown Boone. Residents are encouraged to stop by and pucker up now through Saturday, February 13, when the contest ends. Photo by Ken Ketchie

In an effort to celebrate Valentine’s Day (and the hottest lips around town), John Mena, owner of Haircut 101, will host the Hot Lips 2010 Contest through Saturday, February 13.

Mena is bringing back the much-anticipated contest after taking a year off last year, he said.

Competitors don lipstick, pucker up and blot. Each participant kisses a doily, and these are displayed on the wall of Haircut 101 through Valentine’s Day, Mena said.

Participants can bring their own lipstick or use some of the bright red lipstick furnished by Haircut 101 that is put on disposable spatulas, Mena said.

The contest winner will receive a stylish haircut and blow-dry, a European facial, shampoo, conditioner and styling products from Haircut 101, plus dinner for two at Char.

The dinner includes two entrees, an appetizer and a bottle of wine, Mena said.

This year is the first year that a restaurant has contributed to the contest, he said, adding that the people and food at Char are wonderful, and the restaurant’s participation makes the contest even more about promoting downtown Boone.

The prize for second place is a haircut and blow-dry, and third place will receive shampoo, conditioner and styling products, Mena said.

Each contestant writes their name and phone number on the back of their doily, and winners will be notified on Valentine’s Day, Mena said.

On Sunday, February 14, High Country Press Editor and Publisher Ken Ketchie will judge the lips to determine whose lips are worthy of first, second and third place.

“John talked me into doing this a couple of years ago because he told me I’d get to kiss the competitors,” Ketchie said.

While that turned out not to be true, Ketchie did “get to look at a lot of doilies” and willingly continued being the man for the job. He compared judging the lips to judging art. “Women spend a lot of time on their lips,” he said.
