Compositions for trumpet will be performed this Friday, January 29, during an 8:00 p.m. recital in Rosen Concert Hall. Admission is free.

The evening also features the premiere performance of Thomas W. Zugger’s “Sonata for Trumpet and Piano” written for Stokes. Zugger is an associate professor of trombone and euphonium at the Capital University Conservatory of Music in Columbus, Ohio. His works are regularly performed by artists nationally and internationally and have been featured at both the International Trombone Association and International Clarinet Association annual conventions.

The program also includes “Sonata No. 1 in C for Two Trumpets” by Giuseppe Aldrovandini, “Sonatine for Trumpet and Piano” by Viktor Korda, “Antiphonal Music” by Ken Davies and “Concerto in C for Two Trumpets” by Antonio Vivaldi.

Graduate Guitar Recital Sunday

Mary Robbins Patterson receives her nursing pin after graduating from Caldwell Community College’s nursing program in 1976. A faculty concert on February 2 will raise money for a foundation supporting nursing students named in Patterson’s honor.

Faculty Recital Series: "Love Songs and Jazz!" February 2
Music lovers are invited on a sentimental journey Tuesday, February 2, when ASU’s music faculty perform works featured in Broadway and Hollywood musicals during the 1930s and 1940s.

The 8:00 p.m. performance in Rosen Concert Hall is part of the Hayes School of Music’s Faculty Recital Series. Admission is free, but donations will be accepted for the Mary Robbins Patterson Foundation.

The vocalists are soprano Julia Pedigo, mezzo-soprano Mary Gayle Greene and baritone Joseph Amaya. Accompaniment is by Art Unsworth, piano; Rick Dilling, percussion; and Sam Filip, bass.

The program begins with “Sentimental Journey” by Bud Green, Les Brown and Ben Homer. Recorded at the end of World War II, the song became the unofficial homecoming theme for many veterans. Works by George Gershwin, Jimmie Van Heuson and Cole Porter will be performed, including Porter’s “So In Love,” “Friendship” and “Just One of Those Things.”

Other selections are Richard Rogers’ “My Romance” and “My Funny Valentine” and Hoagy Carmichael’s “Skylark,” “The Nearness of You” and “Stardust.”

Patterson, a wife and mother of five children, graduated from Caldwell Community College & Technical Institute in 1976 as a Registered Nurse, and with her newfound career began to further her dreams of community service.

She continued to serve the communities of Boone and Banner Elk for the duration of her career. Retiring from a 20-year nursing career, in 1996 she returned to the full-time care of her growing family. After spending her final years providing love and encouragement to her six young grandchildren, “Granny” passed away in May 2008.

In memory of Patterson’s desire to provide community service through nursing, the Mary Robbins Patterson Foundation (MRPF) was established in May 2009. The MRPF has partnered with Caldwell Community College & Technical Institute’s nursing program to help provide the emotional and financial support for nursing students to follow their own dreams of community service in nursing. Although a young organization, the MRPF has been able to provide five students with scholarship funds for the 2010 spring semester.
