JANUARY 28, 2010 ISSUE

What’s Up in Downtown Boone?

I would like to share some of highlights from the Downtown Boone Development Association from the end of December 2009 to the beginning of January 2010.

First let’s start off with a little bit about the Downtown Boone Development Association (DBDA). The mission statement of the DBDA was adopted in 1995. This mission statement includes: promotion of historic preservation; to take remedial actions to eliminate the physical, economic and social deterioration of downtown Boone; to disseminate information of and promote interest in the preservation, history, culture, architecture and public use of downtown Boone; to hold meetings, seminars and other activities for the instruction of members and public in the areas of design, economic restructuring and planning management to foster understanding and appreciation of downtown Boone’s history, culture and architecture; and to aid, work and participate in the activities of other organizations and individuals engaged in similar purpose.

The DBDA membership contains four types—property owners, business owners/operators, sponsoring members and art crawl members.

On the parking front, the Town of Boone has facilitated a parking charrette that included many stakeholders interested in downtown parking, and the recommendations were recently presented.

One of the recommendations from the charrette is the formation of a time-limited task force to develop priorities and to make recommendations to Boone Town Council in regard to the parking issues that were submitted at the parking charrette. The suggested time frame for the task force is four-months. The group will consist of twelve-members, with one representative from each of the following agencies and/or groups: Boone Planning Commission, DBDA, Watauga County, TDA, ASU administration/parking, ASU student body, Boone Town Council, downtown property owners, downtown merchants, McLaurin Parking Company, the Boone Area Chamber of Commerce and one at-large member. Updates on the parking task force will appear each month in our DBDA Newsletter.

In the world of downtown public art, a sculpture named Skywalk, created by Wayne Trapp, was donated to downtown Boone via the DBDA, in honor of Joni and Peter Petscham for their many contributions to artists and the arts in the local community. We would like to send a BIG thank to Wayne Trapp and Joni and Peter Petscham for their very generous donation to our downtown. This piece is currently located at Watauga County Public Library. If you have not had a chance to see this piece, please stop by and check it out!
