ASU and Employment Security Commission Job Application Workshops Begin February 9
ASU and the N.C. Employment Security Commission of Boone are teaming up to offer jobseekers information and assistance that could help them land positions at the university.
Beginning Tuesday, February 9, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., ASU Employment Specialist Stephanie Gregg and ESC Employment Consultant Debbie Ewald will jointly present monthly workshops at the Watauga County JobLink Career Center on how to prepare an effective ASU application. The workshops will combine information about the application review and hiring process at the university, as well as one-on-one, hands-on assistance with completing ASU’s online application. Subsequent workshops will be held on the first Tuesday of each month.
“Having a strong application can truly make such a difference because the university can receive up to 200 applications for a single position,” explained Nancy Crowell, assistant Human Resource Services director for employment at ASU.
In early 2007 when ASU transitioned to online-only applications, the Human Resource Services Department began community outreach efforts to encourage and empower jobseekers. Crowell held weekly sessions at the Employment Security Commission office to assist applicants who needed help with the new format.
“We were concerned that applicants who didn’t have computer access would be hesitant to apply,” Crowell said.
Building on the success of those one-on-one sessions, the Human Resource Services staff has developed the new workshop format to assist even more jobseekers in a group setting. Workshop attendees will still get the same kind of one-on-one assistance, dedicated time on a computer to prepare their applications and answers to their questions about working at the university.
“We want to make sure that we are not losing good applicants because of computer access,” Crowell said. “And this kind of outreach is a great benefit to us because it expands our applicant pool.
“The workshops are for people who have never completed an application for the university and for people who have prepared an application and want to make it better,” Crowell explained.
Space is limited because of computer availability, so jobseekers who want to attend a workshop must preregister. To register, call the Watauga County ESC/JobLink Career Center at 828-265-5385 and ask for Debbie.
The Watauga County JobLink Career Center is located at 207 Winkler’s Creek Road in Boone.
