School’s Out, Winter Is In

Watauga students have missed an ominous 13 days of school so far this winter, granting plenty of time for sledding, which Zionville residents Israel, Ethan and Ilias Figlow and Trey Collins (pictured at top) have been enjoying almost daily in their backyard. With more snow and ice in the forecast and six more weeks of winter on the way—based on reports from Punxsutawney Phil and Jim Sparger’s Sugar Grove Slim—it looks like sleigh-riding will soon replace schooling as the normal High Country winter activity. Unfortunately, the possibility for Saturday school is also increasing in the forecast, as students have now missed more than 10 days of academics. Spirits are still up, though, especially after Sparger and Sugar Grove Slim made their annual Groundhog Day visits to local daycare centers, restaurants and other locales, bearing gifts of fresh daisies.
