School winners from each of the county’s eight elementary schools will compete in the countywide spelling bee. The Boone Area Chamber of Commerce coordinates prizes for the winners. All participants in Watauga County Schools spelling bees will receive Wendy’s, Hardee’s and Chick-fil-A coupons and tickets to ASU basketball and Hickory Crawdads games.

Each school winner will receive a family pass to Tweetsie Railroad, pizza from Domino’s, coupons from Backyard Burgers and Marble Slab and a $50 savings bond from High Country Bank. The county winner will receive a $100 savings bond from High Country Bank and advance to the regionals in Winston-Salem. For more information, call 828-264-7190.

Thanks to the Boone Area Chamber of Commerce, adults can be more than just spectators at spelling bees. The annual Spelling Bee for Grown-Ups takes place on Tuesday, March 23, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Broyhill Inn and Conference Center in Boone.

Teams from various businesses and organizations compete in the spelling bee and may pay extra money to stay in the contest if they miss a word. Prizes are awarded for the winner and for the team with the best costumes. The event is a fundraiser for the Watauga Education Foundation. For more information, call 828-264-2225.
