Blowing Rock Jazz Society Features ASU Jazz Ensemble I Sunday
If you don’t have plans for Valentine’s Day—be honest, many of you don’t—or if you’re in the mood for a great evening of jazz, make your reservations now for the Blowing Rock Jazz Society’s February concert featuring the Hayes School of Music’s Jazz Ensemble I.
The concert takes place from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. this Sunday, February 14, at the Meadowbrook Inn in Blowing Rock. Tickets are $15 for the general public, $5 for students and free for Jazz Society members.
“This is our annual tribute to the Jazz Studies program at ASU,” said Fred Germann, president and founder of the Blowing Rock Jazz Society. “It’s just a wonderful showcase of all the great student musicians. It’s normally a very exciting night.”
As in previous years, the Jazz Society will present a donation to the Jazz Studies program from its members and sponsors.
“One of the reasons that I put the group together almost 10 years ago was that it should be directed toward helping young students appreciate and perform jazz,” Germann said.
Directed by Todd Wright, Jazz Ensemble I is a student ensemble from ASU that regularly performs at various locations on campus and occasionally at other venues in the area.
Jazz Ensemble I features Lewis Jones, Brad Beamon, Chris Nordelo, Kenny Williams and Megan Kasper on saxophone; Jordan Craig, Samuel Kraus, Justin Sumners and Brent Hill on trombone; Arabo Bey, Derek Blankenship, Phillip Knorr, Jason Wicks and Crystal Ritchie on trumpet; and Matthew Powers, Dayton Cole, Sam Filip, Timothy Roberts and Will Miller in the rhythm section.
The concert is also being co-promoted as part of ASU’s JAZZfest, a series of jazz performances taking place February 12 to 25.
The Blowing Rock Jazz Society hosts a concert on the second Sunday of each month. The organization is gearing up for its June concert, which will be a celebration of the Jazz Society’s 10th anniversary.
“We’re going to knock it out of the ballpark,” said Germann.
