Filing for 2010 Elections Begin

Filing for 2010 elections began February 8 and will continue until Friday, February 26. High Country Press aims to serve as a one-stop information source for voters this election season, so we’ll be keeping track of all candidate filings to help Watauga and Avery county residents understand the races and who’s running and not running.
Two thousand ten is a big year for elections. Three board of commissioners seats are open in both Avery and Watauga counties, and N.C. Senate seats in both counties are up for grabs. Three board of education seats are open in Watauga County and two board of education seats are open in Avery County.
Watauga County Sheriff Len Hagaman is alone so far in his race, but Avery County Sheriff Kevin Frye must now face off against fellow Republican Russell Carver to solidify his seat for another term. Locally, Democrat Billy Kennedy has filed to take on Rep. Virginia Foxx, who has held her seat as the Fifth District representative since 2005.
For 2010, primary elections—if needed—will take place on May 4; if a second primary election is needed, it will take place on June 22. The general election will take place on November 2.
