Kay Borkowski and Linda Larson Flute and Voice Recital February 16
Soprano Linda Larson joins flutist Kay Borkowski in a Tuesday, February 16, recital at 8:00 p.m. in Rosen Concert Hall. Pianist Bair Shagdaron will accompany them. Admission is free.

“I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Kay and Bair,” Larson said. “The program will include some pieces for voice and flute alone, and some for all three of us.”

The program includes “Rossignols Amoureux” by Jean Philippe Rameau, “Deux poèmes de Ronsard, op. 26, no. 1” by Albert Roussel, “Seven Haiku, op. 3” by Katherine Hoover, “Une flûte invisible” by Camille Saint-Saens and “La flûte enchantée” by Maurice Ravel.

“We also are performing the fabulous piece by Andre Previn, ‘The Giraffes Go to Hamburg,’ with a text from Isak Dinesen’s ‘Out of Africa,’” Larson said. “It’s an incredibly moving piece about giraffes captured for display, about their nobility and the degradation that awaits them.”

Larson’s operatic experiences bring a dramatic element to all of her performances. She has sung leading operatic roles throughout the United States with companies including New York City Opera National Company, Opera Illinois, Syracuse Opera, Tri-Cities Opera, Indianapolis Opera and Opera Memphis.

Borkowski has been principal flutist with the Augusta Symphony, South Carolina Philharmonic, Fort Wayne Philharmonic and Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra. She also has been a flute soloist with the Indiana Chamber Orchestra, Tampa Bay Chamber Orchestra and the Hendersonville Symphony Orchestra.

An accomplished soloist, Shagdaron took fourth prize at the 1980 International J.S. Bach Competition in Leipzig, Germany and third prize at the 1992 International Competition for Piano and Orchestra in Mazara del Vallo, Italy. Also in 1992, he was awarded the honorary title of “The People’s Artist of Buryat Republic” (Russia).
