Giant Used Book Sale at Boone Mall February 25 to 27

Friends of the Watauga County Library will sponsor a used book sale benefiting the library at the Boone Mall Thursday through Saturday, February 25 to 27.
“To me, this kind of book sale is like encountering a treasure chest,” Claire Olander president of the Friends. “You never know what you’ll find. It’s just delightful.”
The Friends’ biggest book sale of the year will include 5,000 to 8,000 books, Olander said.
On Thursday, the sale takes place from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. and is for Friends of the Watauga County Library members only. You may become a member that evening.
“The lowest level of membership for an individual costs $5, so it’s a real bargain,” Olander said.
For the general public, though, the sale opens on Friday, February 26, from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. and on Saturday, February 27, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Most books will sell at the following prices: hardbacks for $1, paperbacks for 50 cents, children’s hardbacks for 50 cents and children’s paperbacks for 25 cents.
“Come early for the best selection,” Olander encouraged.
“I know what kind of winter this has been, but we do not have alternate dates,” she said, adding that she hopes the weather will cooperate for the book sale.
A new aspect of the book sale this year is the addition of gift bags and gift baskets for sale “at reasonable prices,” Olander said.
Examples of these gift packages are pairings of a cooking utensil with cookbooks, or a children’s toy with children’s books, she explained.
Also for sale will be hundreds of old, and in some cases rare, books that range from old school textbooks, such as McGuffey’s Readers, to old history books to old novels, Olander said.
Some old books on the region could also be available, she added.
The table of old and rare books was a component of the Friends’ smaller-scale August book sale, and interest was high, Olander said.
A member of the Friends priced many of the books on eBay, and the book sale prices are set significantly lower, she added.
Also, a selection of specially priced books includes coffee table books, some books about the region and various others that cost more than $1.
All proceeds benefit programs, special events and more at the library.
Community members who want to donate books to the sale can drop off books at the Watauga County Library.
“We’d prefer not to get sets of encyclopedias or books that are moldy or musty smelling,” Olander said.
Olander noted that the event would not be possible without community support, and thanked people from ASU, the Boone National Guard Armory, High Country Homeschoolers and “many other volunteers.”
