Hayes School of Music This Week

The Hayes School of Music features jazz concerts, performances of original student compositions and guest performances by jazz drummer John Riley and opera baritone Lucas Meachem this week.

Unless otherwise indicated, concerts take place in the Broyhill Music Center on the ASU campus. For more information about any of these performances, call 828-262-3020.



Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble Thursday
Fanfares, marches and symphonic works are showcased during a concert this Thursday, February 18. The Hayes School of Music’s Appalachian Symphonic Band and the Appalachian Wind Ensemble perform in Rosen Concert Hall at 8:00 p.m. Admission is free.

Dr. Scott C. Tobias conducts the Appalachian Symphonic Band. Its program includes Andrew Boysen Jr.’s “Kirkpatrick Fanfare,” Percy Grainger’s “Gum-Suckers March,” Jan Van der Roost’s “Canterbury Chorale” and Samuel R. Hazo’s “Arabesque.”

Dr. John Stanley Ross conducts the Appalachian Wind Ensemble. Its program includes the premiere of William G. Harbinson’s “Concerto for Trumpet and Winds” with soloist James Stokes. Harbinson’s composition is described as a “tour de force” for trumpet that explores the full range, technique and expressive capabilities of the instrument and places considerable demands on the accompanying ensemble.

The wind ensemble also will perform Gustav Holst’s “First Suite in E flat for Military Band,” Grainger’s “Irish Tune from County Derry,” two movements from Schubert’s “Little Symphony for Winds” and “Fest Marsch” from Wagner’s “Tannhauser.”



Student Violin and Bassoon Recital Friday
Senior music therapy major Kristin Johnson and junior music education major Sarah Jett will present recitals on the violin and bassoon in the Recital Hall this Friday, February 19, at 6:00 p.m. Admission is free.



Jazz Ensemble I featuring John Riley Friday
Jazz drummer John Riley joins Jazz Ensemble I in a performance this Friday, February 19, at 8:00 p.m. in Farthing Auditorium. Admission is free. The performance includes compositions by Bob Mintzer, Horace Silver, Henry Mancini and others.

Riley is a member of the faculty of Manhattan School of Music and State University of New York-Purchase. He is an artist in residence at Amsterdam Conservatory in Holland. He is the author of “The Art of Bop Drumming,” “Beyond Bop Drumming” and “The Jazz Drummer’s Workshop.”

He has performed as a member of the Woody Herman Band and with Stan Getz, Milt Jackson, Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie and Bob Mintzer. He also has performed with the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra and the Carnegie Hall Jazz Band.

Riley’s appearance at ASU is sponsored by the Student Government Association, Hayes School of Music, Yamaha Corporation of America, Zildjian cymbal company, The Music Center, LP (Latin Percussion) and Remo drumhead company.



Student Violin Recital Sunday
Kimberly Zeigler, senior music performance major, will perform a recital on the violin this Friday, February 19, at 8:00 p.m. in the Recital Hall. Admission is free.



Appalachian Symphonic Band Saturday
The Appalachian Symphonic Band will perform this Saturday, February 20, at 1:30 p.m. at Rosen Concert Hall as part of the Northwest District High School All-District Clinic. Admission is free.



Appalachian Wind Ensemble Saturday
The Appalachian Wind Ensemble will perform this Saturday, February 20, at 8:00 p.m. at Rosen Concert Hall as part of the Northwest District High School All-District Clinic. Admission is free.



Student Voice Recital Sunday
Graduate music performance student Ashley Hollar Sigmon presents a voice recital at 2:00 p.m. this Sunday, February 21, in the Recital Hall. Admission is free.



Scott Kallestad Saxophone Concert Sunday
Saxophonist Scott Kallestad performs classical and contemporary works this Sunday, February 21, at 4:00 p.m. in Rosen Concert Hall. Admission is free.

Kallestad will be accompanied by pianists Cristina Hayes and Joel King and saxophonists Shelly Jackson and Rodney Berry.

The program includes Fisher Tull’s “Fantasy” on “L’Homme armé,” the premier of Traci Mendel’s “Suite for Three Saxophones and Piano,” the prelude from Bach’s “Suite No. 2 for Cello (BWV 1008),” Takashi Yoshimatsu’s “Fuzzy Bird Sonata” and compositions by Jindrich Feld and Walter Hartley.

Kallestad is a member of the Hayes School of Music faculty. An accomplished performer and clinician, Kallestad teaches and performs on all the saxophones. An award-winning composer, Mendel is a member of the Hayes School of Music faculty, where she teaches courses in music theory and aural skills.



Horn Recital Sunday
C.J. Michael presents a horn recital this Sunday, February 21, at 6:00 p.m. in the Recital Hall. Admission is free.



Student Composers Recital February 22
Student composers from the Hayes School of Music will perform their work Monday, February 22, in Rosen Concert Hall. The program begins at 8:00 p.m. The program ranges from compositions for voice to works for bassoons, strings and trombone.

Pianist William Watson will perform “Aardvark on Unicycle” with flutist Johanna Albrecht and violist David Hunt.

Watson also will perform “A Brief History on the Word ‘Pants’ for Theremin and Spoken Word” with vocalist Nathan Brown. Watson will play the theremin, a type of electronic instrument used to manipulate sound waves.

Pianist Brittany Dunton will perform “Detrusion” with violinist Chelsea Whittaker and guitarist Brian Hodges. Tenor Nathan Brown will perform “Ode to a Dream” accompanied by pianist William Watson and trombonists Kris Bifulco and Greg Brown.

Violist David Hunt will perform two of his compositions: “Two Idylls” and “Lachrymae.” His accompanist is Elizabeth Salter on piano and harpsichord. Bassoonists Sarah Jett, Sean Gallagher, Kelly Frost and Anna Fitzgerald will perform Jonathan Carter’s “Eine Erzaehlung.”

The program concludes with Duncan Boatright’s “Ilea Euros Ye for Double Second Steel Pan and String Orchestra.”



Jazz Ensemble II February 23
Jazz Ensemble II, conducted by Rod Berry, will perform a concert on Tuesday, February 23, at 8:00 p.m. in Rosen Concert Hall. Admission is free.



Lucas Meachem Voice Concert February 24
Baritone Lucas Meachem will appear in concert at Rosen Concert Hall on Wednesday, February 24, at 8:00 p.m.

Meachem has performed with the Lyric Opera of Chicago, San Francisco Opera, Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, Metropolitan Opera and many other operas.
