Toubab Krewe was slated to perform at Legends on the campus of ASU on February 4, but that show was canceled due to inclement weather. The snow and ice from that first winter storm of February canceled classes and renewed the winter weather onslaught that has been so prevalent this year. The band is scheduled to return on Wednesday, March 3, with the weather’s cooperation of course, and the band is excited for their anticipated return to Legends.

“Legends is always something we always look forward to,” Teal Brown, drummer for Toubab Krewe said in a recent telephone interview from his home in Asheville. “Boone in general is such a rowdy, fun town. And everybody in that area really knows how to appreciate music. Basically, it’s like every time we go there we’re shocked by how enthusiastic everyone is and how supportive they are of live music. It’s definitely, by far, one of our favorite places to play in the country.”

The band spent six weeks in late summer recording their new album at Echo Mountain Studios in Asheville. “We had a great time recording the new album,” Brown said. “We allowed ourselves a lot of time to explore musically. For the first two weeks we just sat down at our instruments, got comfortable in the space and jammed. We recorded everything and then we went back and listened to it, took notes, found the sweet spots and wrote a lot of stuff around those moments.” Those moments will comprise the much-anticipated release of the new album, slated for release on an undecided date in the next few months. The album, Brown believes, is a new step for the band, which, in the past, has had problems forcing themselves to work in a studio. “We found a lot of new sounds by using a lot of new instrumentation that we haven’t typically used in the past,” Brown said. Some of that new instrumentation comes in the form of keyboards, fiddles, marching drums and a turtle shell. “There’s a wide variety of stuff on the new album that we haven’t done before.”

The winter months have been busy for Toubab Krewe, with a two night run in Asheville to bring in the New Year, a week aboard the Jam Cruise and a mini spring tour of four weekends of dates. Starting March 11, they begin a long spring tour of six weeks with John Brown’s Body, as they continue to get geared up for the summer and the festival circuit.

“We’ve got the Hangout Festival coming up in Gulf Shores, Ala,” Brown said. “It looks like a great festival and we’re really proud to be featured alongside such a great lineup of musicians.” Among the musicians they’ll be playing with at the festival are Trey Anastasio, Ben Harper, the Zac Brown Band and The Flaming Lips.

But right now the band is excited about bringing their energetic show back to Boone. “We’re hoping everyone will be ready to cut loose and have some fun,” Brown said. The band has a special affinity for Boone because of the good energy the crowd brings to the show. “Boone kids really know how to be present with the music and add energy and that means so much for a band,” Brown explained. “When an audience is supportive and gives you a lot of energy right off the bat. It just fuels the music...it’s like throwing fuel on a fire. And we just try to give it right back as much as we can and Boone is definitely one of the best places to do that in the country.”

Toubab Krewe will be playing at Legends on Wednesday, March 3, at 9:00 p.m. Tickets are $10 and are available in advance or at the door. For more information on the band, click to www.toubabkrewe.com.
