Highly Anticipated Photo Contest Unveils Finalists Friday

Dana Warren is a finalist in the Flora/Fauna category of the 2010 Appalachian Mountain Photography Competition for “Bickering Buntings.”
In the 2010 Blue Ridge Parkway Vistas category, Marty Hulsebos is a finalist for “Sunset from the Parkway.”Forty-seven photographs have been selected from more than 1,100 submissions for exhibition in the 7th annual Appalachian Mountain Photography Competition (AMPC), and the public’s first chance to view the finalists is at the Turchin Center this Friday, March 5, during the Downtown Boone Art Crawl.
The exhibition will be on display in the museum’s Mezzanine Gallery, and a free public reception will take place from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Friday. The exhibition remains on display through June 5.
The AMPC is a partnership between ASU’s Outdoor Programs, the Turchin Center and the Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation. This is the first year that AMPC received more than 1,000 submissions, receiving a total of 1,116 entries from 14 states, Kosovo and Quebec.
“The competition has seen consistent growth over the last seven years, and I think with each competition we’ve grown better at getting the word out to people in a lot of different ways,” said Andrew Miller, coordinator of Outdoor Programs.
Awards will be given in nine separate categories: Adventure, Culture, Environment, Flora/Fauna, Landscape, Blue Ridge Parkway Vistas, Blue Ridge Parkway Share the Journey (this year’s theme was picnicking), People’s Choice Award and Best in Show.
Voting for the Footsloggers People’s Choice Award will open this Friday and will close Friday, March 26, at 5:00 p.m. To vote, visit the kiosk located in the Mezzanine Gallery or view the images and vote online by clicking to www.appmtnphotocomp.org.
This year’s judges include Troy Tuttle, senior photographer for ASU; Jamie Goodman, communications coordinator for Appalachian Voices; and portrait photographer Katie Langley. The judges selected the finalists after the registration deadline in January and will return in mid-March to select the final category winners, which will be announced Tuesday, March 30.
Outdoor Programs also hosts screenings of The Banff Mountain Film Festival, an international tour of films with global themes on mountain culture. The 14th annual Banff Film Festival returns to ASU on Friday and Saturday, March 26 and 27.
“Our hope through events like Banff and AMPC [is] to bring together a community of people who share a passion for mountain life, adventure and the arts,” Miller said.
