Election 2010: Candidate Filing Concludes

Important Dates for the 2010 Election

Monday, March 15—Absentee voting period begins
Friday, April 9—Voter registration deadline for May 4 primary
Thursday, April 15—One-stop voting begins
Tuesday, April 27—Last day to request absentee ballot
Saturday, May 1—One-stop voting ends at 1:00 p.m.
Monday, May 3—Absentee ballots due

Tuesday, May 4—Primary Election

Tuesday, May 11—Canvass at 11:00 a.m.
Thursday, June 3—One-stop voting begins for second primary (if necessary)
Saturday, June 19—One-stop voting ends for second primary

Tuesday, June 22—Second Primary (if necessary)

Friday, June 29—Canvass (if necessary)
Friday, September 3—Absentee period begins for November 2 general election
Friday, October 8—Voter registration deadline for November 2 general election
Thursday, October 14—One-stop voting begins for general election
Tuesday, October 26—Last day to request absentee ballot
Saturday, October 30—One-stop voting ends at 1:00 p.m.
Monday, November 1—Absentee ballots due

The candidate filing period for state and county elections officially ended on February 26. Now that the races are set, it’s up to you, the voter, to learn about the candidates, the issues and their positions before primary season heats up in April and May. High Country Press will closely monitor the 2010 election season to help readers make informed decisions for the May 4 primary election and November 2 general election.

If you haven’t already registered to vote, you must do so by Friday, April 9, to vote in the primary election. You must register by Friday, October 8, to vote in the November 2 general election or do same-day registration during the one-stop early voting period.

In Avery County, residents can register to vote at the Board of Elections, located at 200 Montezuma Street in Newland in the Avery County Courthouse Annex, or at the N.C. Department of Motor Vehicles office, located on Highway 194 in Newland. Avery County voter registration information is also available by clicking to www.averycountync.gov/boardOfElections.htm. In Watauga County, residents can register to vote at the Board of Elections, located at 842 West King Street, Suite 6 in Boone, or at the Watauga Public Library, N.C. Drivers License office, Watauga High School and Boone Town Hall. Watauga County voter registration information is also available by clicking to www.wataugacounty.org/elections.
