Epic 2009-10 Season for High Country Snowsports Resorts Winds Down
With the end of the ski season drawing near, resorts in the High Country have begun planning end of season events and posting closing dates.
Appalachian Ski Mountain in Blowing Rock expects to close on Sunday, April 11, concluding with the resort’s famous Meltdown Games on April 10 and 11. The Meltdown Games will include numerous races, contests and the famous pond-skimming contest. “The end of season events are always fun, really laid back and a nice way to wrap up the season,” said Drew Stanley, director of the Appalachian Terrain Park.
Sugar Mountain Resort in Banner Elk will begin March Madness discounts on Monday, March 8, running through the end of the season at the resort. March Madness rates offer savings on lift tickets, rental equipment, lesson prices and winter value packages. When asked when Sugar Mountain can be expected to close for the season, Kim Jochl, director of marketing for Sugar Mountain, said, “Sugar always closes typically at the end of March, based on skier traffic and weather conditions.”
Hawksnest Resort in Seven Devils is planning to end its 2010 snow tubing season on Sunday, April 11. Justin Grimes, zipline and group sales manager, said “Our territory is weather dependent, so we usually close mid April.”
Beech Mountain Resort will host the Edge of the World Contest Series Finals this Sunday, March 7. According to the Ski Beech website, the Beech End of Season Celebration was scheduled for this Sunday as well, but an exact closing date or status of the event could not be confirmed as of press time.
