MARCH 4, 2010 ISSUE

Summer Camp Registration Is On!

Summer may seem like it’s worlds away, but now is the time to start registering your kids for this year’s summer camps.

This compilation represents the 2010 summer camps that High Country Press already knows about. In the March 11 issue, we’ll run a comprehensive listing of summer camps in the area, so send us the details on your camp if you haven’t already! Send camp info to anna@highcountrypress.com.

ASU Camp Invention
ASU will host Camp Invention, a weeklong interactive science day camp that fosters inventive-thinking skills, the week of Monday through Friday, June 28 to July 2, from 8:45 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Camp is open to all current kindergarten through 4th grade students.

Campers will power robotic creatures, explore the connection between bubbles and lightening bolts and help save avatars by rebuilding a virtual world. A camp fee of $195 is good for anyone registering before March 12. For more info, call 828-262-2530 or click to www.pathways.appstate.edu.

Buffalo Cove Outdoor Education Center Earth Camp
The Buffalo Cove Outdoor Education Center presents Earth Camp 2010, a wilderness adventure program. Session II is for ages 8 to 12, takes place Friday, July 23, through Wednesday, July 28, and costs $500.

The center is a nonprofit organization dedicated to meaningful experiences with the earth and community that weave a web of self-confidence and positive interaction. The center teaches through fun and unique outdoor living experiences that promote discovery, self-awareness, friendship and connection to the land.

The kitchen serves home-cooked, healthy, family-style meals created from mostly organic and local foods, including the center’s own gardens. The camps offer experiential education in the lessons of the Southern Appalachian Mountains, including traditional earth skills, campcraft, woodslore, woodworking, archery, backpacking, low-impact camping and river canoeing. To register, print an application from the center’s website, www.buffalocove.com, and mail it to Buffalo Cove Outdoor Education Center, 664 Buckskin Hollow, Deep Gap, NC 28618.
