WHS Senior Fest Ready to Celebrate Upcoming Graduates

Watauga High School seniors will soon earn their diplomas. Before that happens, though, the class will have one last chance to spend time together.

The 344 seniors will be invited to Senior Fest, an alcohol- and drug-free event put on by the school, and the function will be a success because of the community’s involvement.

Graduation Events Coordinator Claire Homeier recently sent out letters to local businesses asking for help to offset the almost $15,000 cost to put on the event.

There will be lots of activities for seniors to take part in, including bingo, door prizes, volleyball and basketball. Depending on the weather, there could be more outdoor activities.

There is also plenty of food for the seniors.

“It’s fun and they get to celebrate with their friends,” Homeier said. “They look forward to it.”

Last year, almost 90 percent of the senior class came to the event.

This isn’t a new event for Watauga High School, but it has a new name. Last year, the seniors voted to rename Project Graduation to Senior Fest.

The festival will be held on the day before graduation (that date isn’t known yet because of the weather wrecking havoc on the school schedule) and will likely take place between 4:00 and 8:00 p.m. at the high school.

Door prizes will be given out and most of those come from donations. Businesses can contribute gift cards or gift certificates and monetary donations will be used to purchase other items. One of the big door prizes in the past has been a laptop computer.

Homeier said she has gotten some donations already. More, though, are needed to make the event a success for the outgoing seniors.

“We look for the community and businesses to be supportive,” Homeier said.

If you would like to contribute money to the project, you can send checks to Watauga High School, Attention: Friends of Watauga - Graduation Events, 400 High School Drive, Boone, N.C. 28607. For more information, contact Homeier at 828-264-2407, extension 249.
