The 9th annual Empty Bowls Project, a collaboration between Watauga High School (WHS) arts students, local businesses, local potters and the community at large, will take place on Saturday, March 27, from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. at WHS, located at 400 High School Drive in Boone. Community guests make a $15 minimum donation, which buys them a simple meal in a handmade bowl, and guests keep the bowls at the end of the night to serve as a reminder that there are always empty bowls and hungry people in the world, an event brochure said.

Empty Bowls is an international project that benefits The Hunger and Health Coalition locally, and raised $6,600 for the organization last year. The previous eight local Empty Bowls suppers raised a total of $33,900 for The Hunger and Health Coalition, according to a February letter from WHS arts students.

WHS arts students and local artisans make and donate the bowls for the event, and local restaurants donate the food.

The March 27 menu includes bread from Stick Boy Bread Company, vegetarian chili from Watauga High School ProStart culinary students, Italian basil minestrone soup from Casa Rustica, potato soup from Pepper’s Restaurant, Southwest black bean soup from Melanie’s Food Fantasy, Brunswick stew from Woodlands Barbeque, Troy’s traditional chili from Troy’s 105 Diner, English pea soup from Glidewell’s Restaurant and desserts from Friends of Watauga.

A silent auction will take place during the event, and members of the high school’s chorus, orchestra, jazz band and theatre classes will provide live music, stated the brochure.

“The Empty Bowls Project connects students to their community in a meaningful way, providing opportunities for their leadership and public service,” said Whit Whitaker, an event organizer. “They become more aware of the hunger faced by many in our county.

“Not only do students work with local businesses, restaurants and potters to make the evening a success, they volunteer their time and enthusiasm setting up, providing entertainment, serving the meal and cleaning up after the event,” he continued. “They clearly see that through the work of many hands, people who are hungry in our community are provided food and services through The Health and Hunger Coalition.”
