Art Classes Available at Turchin Center This Spring

ASU’s Turchin Center announces its schedule of programs at the Community Art School. Workshops and classes are available for art enthusiasts of all ages and artist levels.

Adult Community Artmaking I
Sundays, March 14, 21 and 28, 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.
Adult Community Artmaking II
Sundays, April 11, 18 and 25; May 2, 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.
Discover the artist within using materials to create collages to create a new vision of your life. Enjoy creating art in community with others, inspiring one another as you work with materials found in your home to create images.
Pegge Laine teaches the class in the third-floor classroom of the Turchin Center’s Rosen Family Education Wing. The cost is $45 for Turchin Center members and $55 for nonmembers.
Figure Drawing with Tim Ford
March 20-21, 27-28; April 10-11, 17-18, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Participants in this weekend class will be led through a series of drawing exercises designed to strengthen familiarity with the figure and lead to more expressive and dynamic content. Participants will explore gesture and organization drawing using charcoal, graphite and paint. The course is suitable for beginner and advanced levels.
The class, taught by Tim Ford, meets in Wey Hall Room 306 on the ASU campus. The cost is $45 for Turchin Center members and $55 for nonmembers.
Visual Journals with David Modler
Saturdays, March 20 and 27, 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
A visual journal is similar to a traditional sketchbook or journal. The class will incorporate reflective writing and image making in order to create personal meaning.
Participants are encouraged to bring a new or old and neglected sketchbook, favorite art materials and personal items such as ticket stubs, receipts, letters and photographs.
The class, taught by David Modler, meets in the third-floor classroom of the Turchin Center’s Rosen Family Education Wing. The cost is $40 for Turchin Center members and $50 for nonmembers.
Express Yourself!
Friday, March 26, 10:00 a.m. to noon
Express Yourself! is a series of workshops sponsored by the Community Art School, the Expressive Arts Therapy Program and the Art Department designed to help children and adults with developmental disabilities explore their feelings, develop their creativity, build their social network and have fun through various arts activities.
Kate Brinko teaches the class. Admission is free, but advanced registration is required.
Draw-a-Thon
Friday and Saturday, March 26 and 27
The Turchin Center, in collaboration with ASU’s Department of Art and ASU’s Art Management Organization, will host the inaugural Draw-a-Thon on Friday and Saturday, March 26 and 27. Students, professors and local artists (of all levels and ages) are invited to gather at the Turchin Center to draw from live models during a two-day event with the goal of creating a casual, fun atmosphere that is open to the curious novice, the devoted expert and every level in between. Participants can attend the entire event or drop in as their schedule allows.
The event is tentatively scheduled to last from 5:00 to 11:00 p.m. on Friday and from 9:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Saturday. For more information about this event, contact Brook Bower at 828-262-7520.
