March is Red Cross Month
March is Red Cross Month, which is “a great time to celebrate and appreciate all the volunteers that keep our mountain tradition of taking care of our own real,” said Sonny Sweet, executive director of the Watauga County Chapter of the American Red Cross.
The local chapter was founded in 1917, he added.
High Country residents can take advantage of a month-long special on health and safety classes offered through the Red Cross, Sweet said.
“For $10, you can get certified in CPR, First Aid and Safety or any other health and safety classes, such as babysitting,” he said. “That’s about a $40 savings, thanks to a grant we received that will underwrite some of the expenses.”
Additionally, the local Red Cross chapter is still selling Haiti t-shirts in many local businesses, with proceeds going to the International Disaster Response Fund that will benefit earthquake relief efforts in Haiti, Chile and Turkey, Sweet said.
Also, although the state’s blood supply is considered “adequate” at this time, meaning there is a three-day supply—4,500 pints—“you can always give blood,” Sweet said.
People can also celebrate Red Cross Month by joining the Red Cross as a volunteer, he said.
“There’s always a need for good volunteers for disaster services,” Sweet said.
A meeting for both prospective and current volunteers will take place on Tuesday, March 23, at 6:00 p.m. at the Red Cross office, located at 331 Queen Street, Suite B, in Boone.
