New Watauga High School Slightly Ahead of Schedule

Construction is still slightly ahead of schedule for the new Watauga High School, said Watauga County Manager Robert “Rocky” Nelson.
“We anticipate it being done in May, with classes beginning in August of this year,” Nelson said.
The high school building remained ahead of schedule even with all the recent inclement weather because the outside structure had been completed, so work could continue on the inside regardless of the elements, Nelson explained.
“They’re in the process now of installing ceiling tiles [and] flooring and painting,” he said. “Then they will begin the final paving and final landscaping as the weather breaks, hopefully sometime this month.”
The new high school exceeds 270,000 square feet, he said.
“It’s going to be a facility everyone in the county can be proud of,” Nelson said. “It’s going to be a wonderful educational environment for our kids.”
Once a grand opening is scheduled, which will take place in the “not-too-distant future,” people will be able to see that for themselves, he added.
The land purchase cost more than $7 million, and the construction contract was for slightly more than $60 million, Nelson said.
The contract covers the construction of the building, outside buildings, such as the field house and stadium, and parking, he said.
