Almost Spring?
Spring Officially Arrives This Saturday at 1:32 p.m.

In honor of spring’s official start at 1:32 p.m. this Saturday, March 20, we thought we’d bring readers a photo spread of the first flowers of the season. The only problem was that we couldn’t find any—check that, we found one. Hiding in front of Blowing Rock Town Hall, this crocus found enough sunlight this week to peek above the mulch and remind passersby that, despite the fact that it hasn’t risen above 50 degrees yet, it is in fact springtime. We may be in store for a vibrant blooming season, however, according to Christy Brown at Vaughn’s Blue Ridge Nursery. Snow actually contains nutrients that plants love, so when the already-melting snowpack mixes with warmer temperatures forecast for this weekend, Brown said we could see a surge in tulip, daffodil, crocus and hyacinth sightings across the High Country.
