ASU Opera Presents The Elixir of Love March 25 to 28

ASU’s Opera Workshop will present Donizetti’s The Elixir of Love Thursday through Sunday, March 25 to 28, at Rosen Concert Hall, located in the Broyhill Music Center on campus.
Showtimes are at 8:00 p.m. all nights except Sunday, which features a 2:00 p.m. matinee. Tickets are $12 for the general public and $6 for students.
“I love it. It’s an opera that I’ve performed professionally quite a few times,” said Dr. Joseph Amaya, a Hayes School of Music professor who is directing the performance. “It’s a sweet, romantic comedy—it’s just a fun show.”
In the opera, which was originally written in Italian but will be performed in English, Nemorino, a shy, simple young farmer, is in love with Adina, a wealthy country girl. Adina is also being courted by Belcore, an arrogant military sergeant. When a traveling quack passes off some cheap wine as a powerful love potion, Nemorino buys the potion and consumes it in hopes of seducing his love.
Although the opera was originally set in an Italian village, this production will be set in the Antebellum South. Costumes for the opera have been rented from Harmon’s Dixie Pride in downtown Boone.
“A lot of the costumes that we have will be good copies and will be very authentic,” Amaya said.
The cast of The Elixir of Love features many talented singers, including several state and national award winners, Amaya said.
“Some of them have real promise to go on for outstanding professional careers,” he added.
The cast features David Clark and Adam Sensenbrenner as Belcore, Kate Edahl and Ashley Sigmon as Adina and Johnny Harmon and Paul Whitehead as Nemorino. James Anderson conducts the orchestra.
