“It’s not a quick fix, it’s a lifestyle change,” said Bryan Belcher, manager of Watauga County Healthy Carolinians, about Boone’s Biggest Winner 3.0.

Formerly known as Boone’s Biggest Loser, the third offering of the program has been renamed Boone’s Biggest Winner 3.0, and will take place every Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. in the Broyhill Wellness Center Classroom for 12 weeks beginning Tuesday, March 30.

“We wanted to go for a more positive spin,” Belcher said of the name change.

The program remains focused on promoting weight loss and healthy lifestyles and the approval of a physician is required, Belcher said.

Beginning just in time for people to be able to exercise outdoors as the snow melts and “so people can be looking good at the beach,” Belcher hopes for 15 to 20 participants to enroll, he said.

The cost is $125 for current Wellness Center members and $200 for nonmembers, which includes a three-month membership, he said.

Payment by cash or check is due by the first class on March 30, he added.

Register by Thursday, March 25, for 12 “life-changing weeks,” Belcher said.

Organized by Appalachian Regional Healthcare System and sponsored by Watauga County Healthy Carolinians and Earth Fare, the program includes cooking demonstrations, exercise instruction and tips for a healthier lifestyle.

“People lose an average of about 10 pounds,” Belcher said, adding that the biggest winner will receive a six-month membership to the Wellness Center and second place will win a three-month membership.

Instructor Susan Bacot, a health and wellness consultant, will teach the class for the third time, Belcher said.

The first program included two classes of 20 participants each, and the second program, which ended in February, had 15 participants, he said.

The biggest winner of the most recent program lost 25 pounds and has kept it off so far, “so we were very pleased,” Belcher said.

He added that she enrolled in the upcoming program to make sure the weight stays off, “so that’s a good endorsement.”
