Community Garden Begins Fifth Year
First Workday This Saturday; Plots Still Available
The Leola Street Community Garden will host its first workday of the year this Saturday, March 20.
Now in its fifth growing year, the Leola Street Community Garden, located on Leola Street across from Wal-Mart in Boone, will hold its first workday of the 2010 season this Saturday, March 20, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
The Town of Boone provides the space for the Community Garden, which has about 50 small garden plots available to anyone in the community for a small annual fee. Matt Cooper, coordinator of the garden, said about 20 plots are still available for rent.
Community Garden members enjoy the use of the garden’s tools and donated supplies, such as mulch, compost and seeds. An adjacent creek serves as a supplemental water supply.
“The community garden strives to provide as many free resources as it can,” Cooper said.
A 10-by-15-foot plot is available for $20, a 20-by-14-foot plot is $30 and a 20-by-30-foot plot is $40. In addition, garden volunteers have created four raised beds that are available for gardeners with disabilities.
