Watauga County Sits at 7.8 Percent Unemployment, Avery County at 9.7 Percent, North Carolina at 11.1 Percent

According to the North Carolina Employment Security Commission, the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for North Carolina climbed to 11.1 percent in February, rising from a 10.9 percent unemployment rate in January. The new figures show that 502,533 able-bodied, unemployed workers actively seeking employment in the state can’t find a job.

In Watauga County, the unemployment rate is slightly better than the state average at 7.8 percent, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Based on Watauga’s estimated population of 47,403 (a population estimate for skilled workers is not available), a 7.8 percent unemployment rate translates into 3,697 workers who can’t find work.

In Avery County, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the unemployment rate currently sits at 9.7 percent. Based on Avery’s estimated population of 17,946 (a population estimate for skilled workers is not available), a 9.7 percent unemployment rate translates into 1,741 workers who can’t find a job.

According to The New York Times, a bill that would extend unemployment benefits and healthcare subsidies passed the Senate on March 10 and now moves on to the House. The vote was 62-36 for the bill that would extend through the end of the year expiring provisions in the law that offer as many as 99 weeks of unemployment checks, and would also extend through December 31 a 65 percent subsidy of health insurance premiums for jobless workers.

If approved by the House, the bill would send $25 billion to states struggling with tax revenue to help prevent layoffs of teachers, police officers and other public service employees. It would spend $6 billion to prevent for seven months a 21 percent scheduled cut in Medicare reimbursements.

This week, Democrats are also hoping to finish work on a smaller package of job-creation measures, which includes new tax breaks for companies that hire unemployed workers.
