Watauga Landfill Tipping Fee Waiver Extended to June 7
Applies to Wood Waste from Christmas Day 2009 Ice Storm
Per a request from Watauga Commissioner Winston Kinsey and county resident Karen Miller, the Watauga County Board of Commissioners on March 16 during its regular meeting extended the tipping fee waiver at the Watauga County Landfill to assist residents with the cleanup of wood waste and debris—trees and limbs—caused by the ice storm of December 25, 2009. The county will waive tipping fees for wood waste only through 4:00 p.m. on June 7.
The fee waiver only applies to individual residents transporting wood waste in their private vehicles.
“I couldn’t even get to the limbs [down in my yard] until last week,” said Jim Deal, chair of the Watauga Board of Commissioners. “Even my Christmas lights were frozen on my trees until last week.”
For reference, each property owner who pays a landfill availability fee receives a waiver for the first ton of debris transported to the landfill. Any fees for storm-related debris and wood waste that exceeds this first free ton will be waived for individuals only.
