As the high point of Blowing Rock’s summer season, Chetola Resort welcomes the Symphony of the Mountains Orchestra to perform at this year’s Symphony by the Lake event. Symphony of the Mountains was formed in 1946 as the Kingsport Civic Symphony. Today, the orchestra serves the entire Northeast Tennessee/Southwest Virginia region. Conducted by Maestro Cornelia Kodkani-Laemmli, Symphony of the Mountains consists of more than 65 musicians, drawn from the Tri-Cities area as well as symphony orchestras in Knoxville, Tenn., Asheville, Roanoke, Va. and more. Maestro Kodkani-Laemmli joined the Symphony of the Mountains during its 60th year in 2006. She holds three master’s degrees in piano and choral, one in orchestra conducting, and has conducted various choirs, youth and community orchestras, operas and musical productions throughout Europe. For more information about Symphony of the Mountains, click to www.symphonyofthemountains.org.
At the event, guests are invited to bring a picnic basket, or may choose from one of three dining options prepared by The Manor House Restaurant at Chetola. Options include: Symphony Picnic on the Lawn beginning at 5:30 p.m., priced at $12 for adults and $8 for kids 5 to 12 years old; Symphony Dinner on the Patio, which is open to a limited number of people, includes the symphony ticket for $95 and begins at 6:30 p.m.; and Pre-Symphony Dinner Buffet beginning at 5:00 p.m. and priced at $48 per person.
The event will include a free raffle, which guests may sign up for upon arrival. Prizes include: frames and a signed print by Bob Timberlake, a package for two at Chetola Resort, a Dick Van Dyke signed art piece and four tickets to Blood, Sweat and Tears at An Appalachian Summer Festival.
Patron tents will also be available at the event for concertgoers. Tents may be used for many purposes such as businesses hosting a staff or customer appreciation party, or for individuals and families to enjoy. Patrons may participate in a tent decorating competition and will be granted special parking to be picked up and dropped off at the tent for their set-up and break-down. Because tents are limited in number, interested parties or individuals must call in advance to be placed on a waiting list.
The Blowing Rock Chamber will provide a free shuttle from the Food Lion Shopping Center and Tanger Shoppes on the Parkway in Blowing Rock to Chetola. The shuttle is handicapped accessible and drops concertgoers off at the lawn with a minimum amount of walking.
Following the orchestras performance, a fireworks show will top off the night, which is always a highlight of the evening.
