Greater Avery Tour de Art July 24

The second monthly Greater Avery Tour de Art event takes place on Saturday, July 24, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at 11 galleries and studios in the Foscoe, Banner Elk, Linville and greater Avery County areas.
The tours takes place every fourth Saturday through October. The gallery tour includes paintings, pottery, sculpture, fine art reproductions, framing, lighting and more by established and emerging artists. Galleries may also feature refreshments, special sales and other activities.
A map of the entire tour is available at each location, and directional signs help guide gallery tourists along the 105, 184, 194 and 221 highways.
1. Kevin Beck Studio

Artist Kevin Beck specializes in landscapes in oils and pastels. His work features the Blue Ridge Mountains as well as travels to other locales. His wife, Judi Beck, recently published a book titled The Ecology of Conversation. The studio will also serve herbal teas from its organic herb garden.

Artpurveyors has a forthcoming giclee print edition by artist Janice Hassell, and the store currently features 20 percent off frame moulding collections. Artpurveyors features a large selection of art supplies and offers printing services and art workshops.
Enjoy a glass of wine during the Tour de Art at Artpurveyors, where you’ll also find Tour de Art maps, stickers and t-shirts.
3. Carlton Gallery

The Carlton Gallery will be between exhibitions during the Tour de Art, as its Mid-Summer Exhibition opens on Sunday, July 25. The Carlton Gallery has been in business for more than 25 years, selecting traditional and contemporary creations, a wide variety of fine art and upscale handmade crafts by more than 300 artisans. The gallery features blown glass, sculpture, pottery, jewelry and paintings.
Carlton Gallery is located in the Grandfather Community. Stop by the following day, Sunday, July 25, for an opening reception for the Mid-Summer Exhibition from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m.
4. Linville Gallery

The works of artist Mark Henry are exhibited at the Linville Gallery July 23 to August 3. An artist’s reception takes place during the Tour de Art from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Henry’s passion is landscape painting in oil and pastels, often of North Carolina vistas, and he designs and grafts his own frames. Henry resides in Weaverville and teaches many workshops throughout the year.
5. The Art Cellar Gallery & Framemakers

The glass sculptures of Rick Beck are on display at The Art Cellar Gallery July 19 to 31.
This year, The Art Cellar Gallery has added the dynamic medium of glass to its sculptural offerings with the work of four acclaimed artists, Richard Jolley of Tennessee and North Carolina artists Ken Carder and Rick and Valerie Beck.
The Becks will be the featured artists during the July 24 Tour de Art with a reception for the artists from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. Meet the artists and learn more about their artistic passion and process. Rick Beck’s cast glass sculptures have been exhibited across the U.S. and as far away as Denmark. Rick and wife Valerie’s collaborative works are also highly sought after, and The Art Cellar will feature their blown and painted vessels and platters alongside Rick's cast glass sculptures during their show from July 19 to July 31.
6. The Cheese House Gallery (Avery Arts Council)

The Cheese House Gallery features Out of the Blue, an exhibition of paintings and photography by Beth Brittain, Garner Dewey, Finley Dixon, Carolina Edwards, Jadyn Kadyk, Dee Pelliccio, Alex Thorp, Heather Thorp and Andy Wilson. This will be the last show at the Cheese House Gallery, as the Avery Arts Council is moving to a building in Linville.
Drop by Linville to visit the council’s new location at 77 Ruffin Street, located behind the Old Hampton Store. The council will have a yard sale of artful objects to raise money for renovations to its new space.
7. Sally Nooney Art Gallery

This month, the Sally Nooney Gallery features handmade jewelry and new paintings, as well as turned wood and fused and stained glass. Be sure to catch the afternoon demo with wood techniques by Studio Rustics.

The Alta Vista Gallery and owner Maria Hyde celebrate 20 years of business in Valle Crucis this year. Celebrate with cake and discounts during a birthday bash on the day of Tour de Art—Saturday, July 24.
The July 24 reception from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Alta Vista Gallery in Valle Crucis will be a “Birthday Bash” to celebrate the gallery’s 20th year (and the owner’s 50th). Birthday cake will be served along with other foods and wine from Shelton Vineyards.
“Surviving in the art business is tough, so I figured 20 years is something to truly celebrate,” said owner Maria Santomasso-Hyde. “The actual anniversary for the gallery is in October, so we'll have another party then, on October 23.” Customers will receive a “birthday gift” of 10 percent off purchases on July 24 if they bring in this article or the related advertisement featured in High Country Press.
To help celebrate, artists have brought in new work, including a large number of new pieces from Mangum Pottery, with new glazes and techniques. At the reception, customers will vote for “Best of Show.”
Alta Vista represents more than 100 artists and offers oil paintings, watercolors, limited edition prints, giclees on canvas, kaleidoscopes, stained glass, fused glass, handmade jewelry, art tiles and Mangum Pottery.

87 Ruffin St. Gallery features a large collection of Southern folk art, woodcarvings and hundreds of artful pieces, from pottery to handcrafted furniture. Refreshments will be served. The gallery is located beside the Old Hampton Store in Linville, which features live music during the Tour de Art.
