The 4th annual High Country Caregiver Foundation Benefit Auction takes place on Saturday, August 7, at Lees-McRae College’s Evans Auditorium, located in the Cannon Student Center on the campus in Banner Elk.

Doors open at 5:30 p.m., when the silent auction will begin accepting bids. The live auction begins at 7:00 p.m., facilitated by auctioneer Trevor Browning. Admission is free, and dinner from Sledgehammer Charlie’s is available for a $10 donation. A cash bar will serve beer and wine. Bluegrass band Diana and Sarvis Ridge will perform from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m.

The Caregiver Foundation is a nonprofit that works on behalf of caregivers—people who take care of other adults, often without pay for their services. The foundation is housed under the umbrella of the High Country Council of Governments and serves Avery and Watauga counties.

“The majority of our funds come through this event,” said Brenda Reece, family caregiver support specialist at High Country Council of Governments and the executive director of the Caregiver Foundation.

More than 100 items have been donated for the auction, including golf outings at Linville Ridge Country Club and Mountain Glen, ASU football tickets, paintings, gift baskets, dinners, home décor and furnishings, gift certificates, concert tickets, vacation packages and more.

If someone is interested in an auction item but is unable to attend, he or she can email a bid to Reece, and it will be the starting bid at the auction.

Proceeds will be used to provide $500 vouchers to local caregivers for respite care, giving them a much-needed break from their responsibilities. The vouchers can be redeemed for home care or temporary stays at Appalachian/Brian Estates, Deerfield Ridge Assisted Living, Glenbridge Health and Rehabilitation and other facilities.

“It’s mainly to give the caregiver an opportunity to take care of themselves,” Reece said.

The Caregiver Foundation has awarded about 85 vouchers over the course of its four-year existence. The foundation receives about 10 applications per month for vouchers.
