New Watauga High School Grand Opening Friday

The day Watauga County has been waiting for is finally here. After three long years, Watauga County is now the proud home of a finished, state-of-the-art high school facility. The completion of the new Watauga High School (WHS) building will be formally celebrated with a dedication and ribbon-cutting ceremony this Friday, July 30, at 10:00 a.m.
Watauga County Schools Supt. Marty Hemric said he expects the ceremony to last about 45 minutes and the tours to last about an hour. Hemric, Principal Michael Wyant, Board of Education members Lowell Younce and Deborah Miller, county commissioners and a representative from Golden Leaf will all speak briefly during the grand opening celebration. N.C. Gov. Bev Perdue will deliver the keynote address.
Current WHS students will lead public tours through the new facility after the ceremony. Students will lead community members through the academic wings and the main common areas of the facility. Weather permitting, students will take the public to the athletic facilities around the campus. The public can also go on self-guided tours.
“This is a grand facility,” Hemric said. “It’s going to empower our youth for phenomenal success whether they’re preparing to go onto higher [education] or careers in the workforce. They’re going to do that at such a higher level because of the resources that our teachers and students have to work with.”
The grand opening will be held rain or shine.
