Old Linville Fire 100 Percent Contained

The forest fire that had been burning near the Linville Gorge since July 22 is now 100 percent contained, according to Carolyn Dawson, service forester with the North Carolina Forest Service. The fire, dubbed “The Old Linville Fire” by the Forest Service, was caused by a lightning strike on July 22 and spread over five acres of wooded terrain behind the Baxter Plant off of Highway 221 before firefighters were called in to contain the fire. Heavy rains that fell across the area on Monday night further helped to extinguish the wildfire.
“Our firefighters are out there today mopping up some of the remaining hot spots, and the fire is in good shape,” Dawson said July 26. “We're going to stay on this fire until significant rain puts it out, or we get significant control of it. But we'll be checking on it until we're one hundred percent sure it's out.”
