Several months ago, a friend of Jimmy Kerr’s told him she had signed up for the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer. But there was one problem: to raise a significant amount of money for its cause, the Avon Foundation for Women requires participating walkers to raise at least $1,800. Kerr’s friend worked full time and didn’t know how she would find time to raise the money.

“I got to thinking…there’s no reason we can’t get together local shops, business owners, artists, vendors [and] musicians and raise money,” Kerr said.

Kerr, along with his friend Andrew Warren, decided to form Rock2Change, an organization that will work with musicians, local artisans, local businesses and other donors to raise money for worthy causes.

Rock2Change’s first event, taking place Saturday, August 7, at Galileo’s Café in downtown Boone, will raise money for participants in the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer in Charlotte in October. The fundraiser begins at 6:00 p.m. and will last until midnight.

Tickets are $5, which includes entry into a raffle.

Performing will be The Major Sevens, the Worthless Son-in-Laws, Shay Lovette & Friends, the High Country Neckbeard Orchestra and the Drawlstrings. Music will begin outside, weather permitting, and will move inside later in the evening.

The Major Sevens are a bluegrass, folk and rock band based in Boone—you might have caught them at MusicFest ‘n Sugar Grove a couple of weekends ago. With fresh new material and energy since returning to performing after a brief hiatus, the Worthless Son-in-Laws, who performed at MerleFest in 2007, will bring what they call “Southern indie rock” to the Rock2Change fundraiser.

Shay Lovette & Friends perform bluegrass originals and covers of contemporary songs, while the High Country Neckbeard Orchestra will crank up the sound and energy with high-energy, electric, alt. country rock. The Drawlstrings—of which Kerr is a member—play a combination of blues, rock and alt. country described as “punkgrass.”

Local artists have donated photographs, sculptures, paintings and wood works that will either be raffled off or sold in silent auction.

Sponsors include Galileo’s Café, Koncepts Hookah Lounge, High Country Farmers’ Market, Speakeasy Tattoo, River Earth Adventures and the Avon Foundation for Women.

Kerr hopes to host future Rock2Change events benefiting other organizations as well as school music programs.

“I’m really looking forward to seeing how many people come out and actually fulfill what I think is the mantra of this town…the locality of it all and really making a difference,” Kerr said.
