Gov. Bev Perdue To Deliver Keynote Address
N.C. Gov. Bev BerdueWataugans, your new school is ready.
By the time you read these words in the newspaper, the finishing touches on the new Watauga High School will be complete, and it’s all in preparation for you, the citizens of Watauga County, who are invited to tour the new state-of-the-art education facility this Friday, July 30, starting with a dedication and ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10:00 a.m.
Underscoring the significance of the school’s completion, N.C. Gov. Bev Perdue will be on hand this Friday to deliver the keynote address, and Watauga County Schools Supt. Dr. Marty Hemric, Principal Michel Wyant, Board of Education members Lowell Younce and Deborah Miller, county commissioners and a Golden Leaf representative will also share remarks memorializing the moment in Watauga County history.
The 10:00 a.m. dedication and ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place outside the main entrance to the new high school, and is expected to last approximately 45 minutes. Following the ribbon cutting, the general public will be allowed to embark on self-guided tours of the facility while enjoying refreshments provided by local businesses. Attendees can explore the high school on their own until it closes for the day at 2:00 p.m.; attendees do not have to attend the dedication and ribbon-cutting ceremony to take a tour of the school. In addition to self-guided tours, current Watauga High School students will lead guided tours through the new facility at 11:00 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. All activities are open to the general public and are free of charge.
For this Friday’s dedication, ribbon cutting and tours, attendees are asked to arrive via the entrance located across from the Industrial Park on Highway 421; the Perkinsville entrance to the new high school will be closed. Parking will be available on site Friday, but Watauga County Schools staff encourages attendees to carpool to reduce congestion.
The grand opening will be held rain or shine. Check inside this week’s issue of High Country Press for a 24-page special section on the new Watauga High School. For more information, call Watauga County Schools at 828-264-7190.
