Walk Boone Maps Soon To Hit Streets
Walk Boone, a project of the town’s Alternative Transportation Subcommittee of the Transportation Committee, has created maps to help identify sidewalks and trails within the Town of Boone.
The committee has ordered 10,000 copies of the free maps, which will soon be distributed in area hotels, restaurants, Watauga Medical Center and the Wellness Center, the ASU campus and other locations.
The publication will provide directional maps of downtown and the Greenway Trail and identify roadways along which sidewalks are placed.
“All in all, we’d like to see more people walking and less cars,” said Blake Brown, director of the Boone Public Works department.
The maps are designed not only for adults but to encourage families to walk with their children, Brown said, and distances are marked to help pedestrians track how far they have walked. The maps will also provide guidelines for walking safely and walking for your health.
The maps are funded through a grant from the state’s Childhood Obesity Prevention Demonstration Project. They were initially due for completion in summer 2009, but the printing company was sold to another firm, which delayed the process, Brown said.
“It has taken a while, but we feel the final product will be worth the wait,” he said.
