Avery County Fair September 7 to 11

The Avery Agricultural and Horticultural Fair in Newland will feature about 20 rides.The 18th annual Avery County Agricultural & Horticultural Fair will take place Tuesday through Saturday, September 7 to 11, at Heritage Park in Newland. The fair is open from 5:00 to 10:00 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and from noon to 10:00 p.m. Saturday. Rides will open at 6:00 p.m. on weekdays and at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday.
Gate prices are $6 for adults, $3 for kids 6 to 12 and free for kids 5 and under. Ride bracelets are $15, and tickets for the Balsam Range and Ryan Pelton concerts are $5.
This year’s fair will feature about 20 rides, a petting zoo, a beauty pageant, multiple contests and plenty of entertainment.
Performing at the fair will be Alan Johnson on Wednesday, September 8, at 8:00 p.m., Balsam Range on Thursday, September 9, at 8:00 p.m., Ryan Pelton on Friday, September 10, at 8:00 p.m., and the Roads Brothers Band on Saturday, September 11, at 8:00 p.m.
Contests include the beauty pageant on Tuesday, September 7, at 6:00 p.m.; the pumpkin pie bakeoff at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 8; a zucchini bakeoff at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 9; and a chocolate chip cookie bakeoff at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, September 10.
Saturday’s competitions include the chainsaw event at 12:00 p.m., a chicken show at 12:00 p.m., an apple pie bakeoff at 2:00 p.m. and a talent show at 6:00 p.m.
A John Deere tractor will be raffled off at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday. Raffle tickets are available at Avery Hardware, and only 350 will be sold.
Other activities include the petting zoo with barnyard, nursery and exotic; cross cut sawing every day starting at 5:00 p.m. and box car every day starting at 5:00 p.m.
