ASU’s annual five-week Queer Film Series will begin Monday, September 13, at 7:30 p.m. in Room 114 of Belk Library & Information Commons with the documentary 8: The Mormon Proposition. All movies are free and open to the public, and discussions will follow each film.

The Queer Film Series was founded in fall 2000 by ASU professors Kim Hall and Sandie Gravett, both of the Department of Philosophy and Religion, to honor the tradition of October 11 as National Coming Out Day. The series exists to increase campus and community awareness of the histories, lives and cultures of LGBTQI (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning and intersex) persons. Attendance has increased since the series’ first year, and the event now averages between 75 and 125 people per film.

This year’s series includes:

Monday, September 13
Narrated by Dustin Lance Black, the Academy Award-winning screenwriter of Milk, 8: The Mormon Proposition (2010, 80 minutes) provides a look into the Mormon Church’s involvement in the promotion and passage of Proposition 8, the 2008 ballot proposition that banned same-sex marriage in the California Constitution. The documentary also examines the church’s long-lasting campaign against gay rights across the United States.

Monday, September 20
Gen Silent (2010, 63 minutes) is an award-winning film that documents elderly LGBT people who decide to go back into the closest to survive in the United States healthcare system. The film follows six elders and a variety of paid caregivers, some who make the seniors feel safe and some who discriminate, neglect or abuse them. In the end, each subject crosses paths with passionate professionals who are attempting to reform the healthcare industries.

Monday, September 27
In Were the World Mine (2008, 95 minutes), Timothy is cast as Puck in A Midsummer Night’s Dream and stumbles upon a recipe for the play’s magical love flower. With this recipe, he is able to turn most of the people in his hometown gay in order to make them spend time in his shoes.

Monday, October 4
A married fisherman tries to reconcile his devotion to his male lover within his town’s rigid traditions in Undertow (Contracorriente). Set on the Peruvian seaside, Undertow (2009, 100 minutes) is in Spanish with English subtitles.

Monday, October 11
The Owls (2010, 66 minutes) tells the story of four older lesbians who kill a younger one and try to get away with it. This film—directed by Cheryl Dunye—had a budget of only $22,000 and stars some of the most popular underground artists in Lesbian Cinema.
