Boone United Methodist Church, located at 271 New Market Boulevard in Boone, will host its 26th annual Fall Bazaar on Friday and Saturday, September 17 and 18. Always on the third weekend in September, the event includes a silent auction, huge yard sale, meals available “at very affordable prices” and more, said Rosie Bentley, event chair.

The event runs from 7:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday and from 7:30 to 11:00 a.m. on Saturday.

“We look forward to it as one of the largest recycling events in the county,” Bentley said of the bazaar.

The yard sale will feature furniture, computers, electronics, sports equipment, clothing, handmade crafts, books, baked goods and more.

“We’re known for Moravian chicken pies,” Bentley said, adding that about 400 pies are on order, and they will sell for $13 each.

Starting a week before the event, 300 to 400 church volunteers will unload two tractor-trailers full of donated items to sell as the yard sale portion of the bazaar, she said.

The bazaar supports local missions, as well as debt reduction for the church, she said. More than 1,000 people attend the annual bazaar, and “folks mark their calendars,” Bentley said, explaining that attendees come from several states.

The event is “the best way to get to know your friends, [and many people] have lunch with people they haven’t seen in a year,” she said, explaining that the wide variety of items available combined with the friendly atmosphere attract people to the bazaar.

Breakfast will be served from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. on Friday and Saturday, and lunch and dinner will be served on Friday, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., respectively.

Families are encouraged to attend, and dinner on Friday is served either at a cost per plate or for $15 per family of four. To view menus and prices for all the meals, click to www.booneumc.org.

On Friday during the event, Appalachian Regional Healthcare System will provide free blood pressure checks and hand out “literature on stroke prevention,” Bentley said.

Also on Friday, the church’s director of music will give organ recitals at four different times, allowing people at the event to hear the commanding sound of the organ for free.

The silent auction closes at 6:00 p.m. on Friday and will include items such as artwork, gift certificates, jewelry, clothing, handmade items and much more, she said.
