Hailed as “a great American band” by Sam Shepard, the Red Clay Ramblers will perform at ASU’s Farthing Auditorium on Friday, September 17, at 8:00 p.m. as part of this year’s Performing Arts Series.

Advance tickets are now on sale, and adults cost $20, seniors and ASU faculty and staff members are $18 and ASU students are $10. Tickets can be purchased at the Farthing Box Office at ASU or by clicking to www.pas.appstate.edu. Prices will increase at the door on show nights.

A North Carolina string band, the Ramblers have their roots in old-time mountain music as well as bluegrass, country, rock, New Orleans jazz, gospel and the American musical.

The group consists of Jack Herrick on bass, trumpet, guitar, bouzouki and whistles; Clay Buckner on the fiddle, mandolin and harmonica; Chris Frank on accordion, guitar, tuba, ukulele and trombone; and Bland Simpson on piano.

In 1993, Fool Moon, a theater production created by and starring Bill Irwin and David Shiner with music by the Ramblers, earned the group their second Drama Desk nomination for Outstanding Music in a Play. The production went on to run abroad in Vienna and Munich, eventually enjoying a five-week run at the Kennedy Center in 1999, and it received a Special Tony Award on June 6, 1999.

The band has toured extensively in North America and in Europe, and over the years, the Ramblers have performed with Ralph Stanley and the Clinch Mountain Boys, Eugene Chadbourn and Grammy winner Shawn Colvin.

The group’s latest CD, Old North State, was released in October 2009.

Upcoming events that are part of the Performing Arts Series include Preservation Hall Jazz Band with the Del McCoury Band on Friday, October 29, and the North Carolina Symphony on Thursday, November 11, both at Farthing Auditorium at 8:00 p.m.

The series is presented by ASU’s Office of Arts and Cultural Programs. For more information, call 828-262-6084 or click to www.pas.appstate.edu.
